The Polish/Irish Wedding
26th-30th August 2004
After landing in Poland, our crazy Polish driver (the groom, Bartek, who later turned out to be a reasonably sane Polish driver,
shown below wearing some awful goggles he thought were fashionable) took us for a 25 minute
run through Warsaw. Along with a Marks and Spencer and Tesco's, there was a wide range of buildings from brand new
skyscrapers to some very run down apartments. We even saw the old Russian
building below (apparently the Polish hate the Russians!).
We arrived at Siobhan and Bartek's (the Bride and Groom)
3rd floor apartment (view below) , where the girls went off to get their
hair done of course, leaving the guys to wander around the nearby
streets, and through a dodgy Polish market. I managed to find a
supermarket of sorts and buy a drink and some bread, but that was about
as exciting as it got.
A large van type taxi transported some of us to the wedding.
It took an hour to get to the villa for the ceremony, and it was the
most go-kart like experience I've ever had when I wasn't in a go-kart.
The driver was mad! The ceremony was in a picturesque little
villa, and outside afterwards there was a champagne toast and gathering
in the garden.

The reception was held in what was normally a stylish
Italian restaurant, where the main courses were beef or salmon! (The
beef was excellent). The speeches took quite a while due to the
necessary translation, but after all the formalities, the partying
began.

Drinking a variety of wine's, vodka and beer we had a
great time until winding up around 3am. The taxi ride back to town
seemed to go much quicker, but that might have had something to do with
the alcohol.

The day after (late in the afternoon thankfully),
Bartek's parents hosted a BBQ at their house. It was a reasonably
subdued affair, and everyone retired early for some well deserved sleep.
The next day some of us would be flying back to Dublin for wedding part
2!
On Saturday evening there was another lovely ceremony
and reception for all the Irish friends and family who were unable to
make it to Poland. There was more drinking, dancing and general partying
to be done. Unfortunately, by the time Monday came round I had to head
back to London on my Ryanair flight. A great weekend, but
unfortunately I was back to work far too quickly!
