Kerry, Rana, Diana and I headed off for Berlin on another weekend city excursion. I was quite looking forward to Berlin as it is such an interesting place due to all the turmoil its
been through in its history. Well, little did I realise that my expectations would be met, as although it was cold and grey the whole weekend, Berlin simply oozes history, intrigue
and in some cases sheer horror. That being said it seems like a really nice city these days too, but considering what we took in on our trip, we didn't really experience everyday Berlin. On Saturday,
after taking ourselves to the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Tiergarten, we went on an Iron Curtain tour, fascinatingly hosted by someone who used to live in East Germany, and was actually quite pro
East Germany. On Sunday, we took a Third Reich tour hosted by an ex British diplomat among other things, which was also incredibly interesting. I could easily talk for a whole lot longer about Berlin here,
and could also easily go back for another few days, but I think the single most intriguing place to me oddly, was a train station called Friedrichstraße, which was the thinnest point in the wall. Westerners caught trains
to one set of platforms, East Germans to another set, guards at either end, and a metal barrier between them. An incredible situation.
